Seeing is Believing

Yesterday was Mom’s 89th birthday. Shortly before dinner our daughter and granddaughter, Dana and Amber, called to wish her happy birthday. I passed her my cell phone and, as I told her Amber, her great-granddaughter, was on the phone, she put it up to her deaf ear and shouted, “Hello? Who is this?”

I watched for a moment or two as she waited for a response before yelling, “That’s your bad ear, Mom. Switch to the other one.”

“Oh, right,” she muttered, moving the phone to the other side of her head before asking loudly,” Who am I talking to?”

As I walked away, I heard her respond to whatever Amber said with, “Oh, okay, if you say so. Since I can’t see you I didn’t know who you were.”
